Teenage Engineering’s KO Sidekick is a mixer with fun performance effects
Source: The Verge
Overview
The EP-136 KO Sidekick is Teenage Engineering’s stylish new two‑channel mixer, designed to connect two of its KO‑II samplers for live performances and DJ sets, though it can accept any two audio sources. In addition to mixing, the Sidekick functions as a robust effects processor, bringing some of TE’s beloved punch‑in effects to any instrument.
Inputs and Connectivity
- Default configuration: two stereo inputs.
- Optional configuration: four mono inputs using split audio adapters.
- USB‑C: supports two stereo channels, allowing control of DJ apps on a phone or tablet.
Each channel includes a simple three‑band EQ and a built‑in compressor with three selectable modes. The device retains the KO‑II design language and connects directly via pegs, but replaces the cryptic icon UI with a small high‑resolution color LCD screen.
Channel Effects
The Sidekick offers six built‑in effects:
- DJ filter
- Tremolo
- Delay
- Tape
- Loop
- Siren
Effects can be adjusted with the mod stick or the pressure‑sensitive pad—press harder for a more dramatic effect. Effects may be automated to change over time without continuous pad contact. The device automatically detects the BPM of incoming audio to keep rhythmic effects (e.g., tremolo) in sync. Effects can be routed in series or parallel, allowing independent processing per channel or stacked processing on the master output.
