Overview
Light‑based internet provider Taara, which spun out of Alphabet’s “moonshot” incubator last year, has launched Taara Beam. The device delivers up to 25 Gbps connectivity within cities using invisible beams of light, provided a clear line of sight is available.
Technical specifications
- Form factor: shoebox‑sized unit that can be mounted on street poles or rooftops
- Weight: 8 kg (≈ 18 lb)
- Power consumption: ~90 W
- Maximum range: up to 10 km (≈ 6 mi) in urban environments
Comparison with Taara Lightbridge
- Taara Lightbridge (previous generation) connects communities separated by water or mountains, reaching distances of up to 20 km (≈ 12 mi).
- Taara Beam is designed for city‑wide deployments, offering higher throughput (25 Gbps) while being smaller and easier to install on existing infrastructure.
