Audio Enhancements

Super ZSNES can replace the original audio samples with uncompressed versions (see the “restored” versions of SNES game soundtracks). These uncompressed samples are discussed in detail in this video: uncompressed audio samples are a whole thing. The changes are applied at the emulator level, so they do not modify ROM files or include ROM data, keeping the project insulated from legal action.

Graphics Enhancements

Super ZSNES can add true 3‑D rendering to games that use the Mode 7 effect, rather than merely upscaling the graphics. An overview video by Modern Vintage Gamer demonstrates many of these updates in action. While these enhancements may not satisfy retro‑game purists chasing the perfect CRT filter (see this article), they provide a fresh visual and audio experience for titles like Super Mario World.

Supported Games

The initial release includes per‑game enhancements for seven popular titles:

  • F‑Zero
  • Gradius 3
  • Mega Man X (first entry)
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls & Ghosts
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid

Developers plan to add support for additional games, and users will be able to create their own enhancements using tools built into the emulator.

Platform Support and Future Plans

  • Current platforms: Windows, Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, Linux, and Android.
  • Upcoming: An iOS release is “coming soon.”

Future updates aim to deliver:

  • General bug fixes and performance optimizations
  • Support for popular SNES enhancement chips such as the DSP‑1 and SuperFX
  • Additional types of enhancements
  • Online netplay and more features.
