Studio Display XDR adding full calibration support
The first reviews of Apple’s new Studio Display XDR were published yesterday, providing an in‑depth look at the mini‑LED panel, 120 Hz refresh rate, and other features. In a review for The Verge, John Higgins noted that one capability is still missing: support for full calibration.
Reference modes and factory calibration
Apple touts a wide range of reference modes, including Apple‑specific presets, Adobe profiles, and new DICOM medical‑imaging settings. However, Higgins observed a flaw in the factory calibration:
“Brightness at the lower end of the grayscale was too high, so shadows aren’t as deep as they should be, and some darker colors are too bright.”
Planned full‑calibration support
Higgins explains that a future software update will enable full calibration, covering white point, color primaries, luminance, and gamma. Currently, only fine‑tune adjustments for white point and luminance are available.
“Brightness at the lower end of the grayscale was too high, so shadows aren’t as deep as they should be, and some darker colors are too bright. But this is with the factory calibration. You’ll also be able to calibrate the Studio Display XDR, which I fully expect every professional or studio to do. Right now there’s only fine‑tune calibration adjustment available (for only white point and luminance), but full calibration (which covers white point, color primaries, luminance, and gamma) will be enabled with a later update.”
There is no announced timeline for this update. Higgins also referenced a white paper that details the calibration options and color system.
Availability
The Studio Display XDR is slated for release on March 11 and is currently available for pre‑order at $3,299 via the link above.
