Context

I’ve been trying to stay busy while I have time to think about the things I can’t think about when I’m working. It’s the beginning of 2026, and I’ve realized I haven’t written anything in about eight years. Everyone needs a hobby that develops talents beyond coding—writing, in this case, can be that hobby.

Why Writing as a Hobby Helps Developers

  • Frees up your mind and gives you mental space.
  • Improves your reading habits beyond social media.
  • Lets you express thoughts you might not say out loud.
  • Boosts confidence when you’re right and softens the sting of being wrong.
  • Develops and sharpens your writing skills, both by writing and by reading others.
  • Shows you that you can write.
  • Exposes you to stories and mindsets of people similar to you.
  • Provides a way to join and contribute to a community.
  • Helps you get involved in a dev‑focused environment.
  • Expands your knowledge base.
  • Lets you test ideas, see if they make sense, and improve them over time.
  • Encourages you to invest time in writing well, which deepens understanding.
  • Gives you a chance to create something valuable for yourself and for readers.
  • Allows you to reflect on others’ experiences and learn from them.
  • Helps you organize your thoughts before, during, and after writing.
  • Enables you to be authentic and find your own voice.
  • Reveals your personal writing style or “mode.”
  • Shows that consistent practice leads to improvement.
  • Simply put: you can just do it.

Hopefully this helps me evolve, and maybe it helps you find a hobby that enriches both your personal and professional life.

See you soon.
