Overview
Starlink is preparing to launch its second‑generation satellite constellation, dubbed V2, which aims to deliver speeds comparable to traditional terrestrial networks. At the Mobile World Congress keynote, Starlink executives outlined the roadmap for this upgrade.
“The goal of Starlink Mobile … is to provide a terrestrial‑like connectivity when you’re connected to the satellite system. In the right conditions, it should look and feel like you’re connected to a high‑performing 5G terrestrial network.” – Michael Nicolls, SpaceX senior vice president of Starlink engineering
Technical Details
- Download speeds: Up to 150 Mbps in ideal conditions, comparable to broadband experiences.
- Data density: V2 satellites will offer 100× the data density of the current generation, enabling faster streaming, browsing, and more reliable voice calls.
- Polar coverage: Improved service to Earth’s polar regions, which traditionally suffer from unreliable connectivity.
Launch Timeline
- Mid‑2027: SpaceX plans to begin launching more than 50 V2 satellites per launch.
- Six‑month rollout: The goal is to build out a full V2 constellation within six months of the first launch.
Partnerships
- Deutsche Telekom: Starlink announced a partnership with the German telecommunications company to address internet coverage gaps in Europe, with services expected to start in 2028.
