Spotify and Universal Music strike deal allowing fan-made AI covers and remixes
Source: TechCrunch
Spotify announced a partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG) that will let fans use generative‑AI tools to create covers and remixes of their favorite songs. The feature will be offered as a paid add‑on for Spotify Premium subscribers and will include a revenue‑share model for participating artists whose work is used in AI‑generated music.
The companies have reached a licensing agreement, though pricing and a launch date have not been disclosed. Spotify previously hinted at its AI plans, noting collaborations with UMG, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to develop “artist‑first” AI products.
Guiding principles
- Consent: Artists and rightsholders can choose whether and how to participate in AI tools.
- Compensation: Participants receive fair compensation for AI‑generated uses of their work.
- Credit: Proper attribution is built into the system.
“Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does, and fan‑made covers and remixes are next. What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part,” – Alex Norström, Spotify co‑CEO, on the UMG agreement.
Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG, described the deal as a way for artists to deepen fan relationships and generate additional revenue. Specific UMG artists who will participate have not yet been announced.
Legal backdrop
Earlier AI music services such as Suno and Udio operated on uncertain legal ground, leading to lawsuits from major labels. Notable settlements include:
- Suno’s $500 million settlement with Warner Music Group after a lawsuit (see the settlement report).
- Ongoing copyright claims against Suno from UMG, Sony Music, and others (see Digital Music News and Music Business Worldwide).
- Udio’s settlements with Warner Music and UMG, with negotiations still pending with Sony.
Seeing strong consumer demand, Spotify opted to secure a direct licensing deal with a label, positioning UMG as the first of potentially several label partnerships.
