Sony has been experimenting with dynamic pricing on the PlayStation Store, apparently since as early as November of last year, targeting discounts to specific player regions. This information comes from the website PSPrices, which tracks trends in Sony’s pricing over time. PSPrices recently reported an increase in the number of games undergoing dynamic pricing.

Findings

  • The experiment covered 68 regions and 139 games, including first‑party AAA titles such as God of War, Spider‑Man, HELLDIVERS 2, and Stellar Blade.
  • Average discounts ranged from just over 5 % at the low end to nearly 18 % at the high end.
  • Personalized discounts were also observed; some accounts received a massive 56 % off the regular price of Helldivers 2.

Currently, both the United States and Japan are exempt from the experiment, likely due to stricter market regulations. The test therefore affects millions of customers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Potential Implications

If Sony adopts dynamic pricing more broadly, it may also employ “surge pricing,” selectively raising prices on its most popular or in‑demand titles. Discovering that one player paid full price while another from a different country received a 50 % discount could provoke backlash among gamers.
