Overview

Sonos is preparing a major update to its app that aims to simplify navigation and introduce iPhone Lock Screen controls using Live Activities. The effort is part of a broader attempt to rebuild confidence after the company’s troubled 2024 software overhaul, as reported by Bloomberg.

Planned Changes

  • Scope: A series of optional changes to the iPhone and Android apps will roll out over the coming months.
  • Focus: Usability improvements, streamlined navigation, and more accessible playback controls.
  • Release Strategy: Updates will arrive gradually rather than as a sweeping redesign, reflecting a shift from the widely criticized 2024 app relaunch.

Sonos CEO Tom Conrad demonstrated early versions of the revised interface at the company’s headquarters in Goleta, California. He told Bloomberg that, despite improvements made over the past year, the current app still has several usability issues. The final design is still evolving, with the goal of reducing friction in tasks such as switching rooms, managing playback, and accessing frequently used controls.

iOS Lock Screen Controls

A notable change being developed specifically for iOS is the addition of Lock Screen playback controls for Sonos speakers.

  • Android: The feature is already available, allowing users to control music without opening the Sonos app.
  • iPhone: Sonos plans to implement similar functionality using Apple’s Live Activities feature.

Live Activities

Live Activities were introduced in iOS 16 as part of the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island experience. The framework lets apps display continuously updated information on the Lock Screen and, on supported devices, within the Dynamic Island area. Common uses include:

  • Sports scores
  • Ride‑sharing progress
  • Delivery tracking
  • Timers

They can also provide persistent media controls, which Sonos intends to leverage for its speakers.

Release Timeline

Sonos has not announced a specific release date for the updated interface. Further details may be shared with customers in late March or April as development progresses.
