Sneak peek at new Siri app reveals Apple’s plans to take on ChatGPT and more
Source: TechCrunch
Just ahead of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Bloomberg has published leaked renders of what Apple’s planned AI upgrade could look like on iPhone — including a brand‑new Siri app meant to rival ChatGPT and other AI chatbots — as well as how Siri’s new capabilities will be woven throughout the operating system.
The images were produced by Bloomberg based on what it saw and learned from sources.
Dynamic Island Integration
While you’ll still be able to press a button in iOS 27 to trigger Siri, the animation and response will now emerge from the iPhone’s Dynamic Island — the black pill‑shaped area at the top of the screen that today houses Live Activities, real‑time updates, and interactive displays from apps. This mode will work best for quick voice queries or searches, much like how people use Siri currently.
Spotlight Search Integration
A new mode will put Siri‑powered search within easy reach by leveraging the familiar swipe‑down gesture that opens Spotlight Search. The gesture will still open search, but results will now draw on an AI‑powered Siri that includes a rebuilt model using Google’s Gemini AI technology under the hood, according to TechCrunch.

From the Dynamic Island, iPhone users can:
- Search the web and their device
- Launch apps
- Start messages
- Ask about the weather
- Add calendar appointments
- Search notes
- Trigger app shortcuts
Results are displayed in formatted text within a card‑style interface that also emerges from the Dynamic Island.
AI Model and Partnerships
Apple’s approach mirrors its earlier multi‑billion‑dollar partnership with Google that made Google the default search engine on iPhone. Building a search engine—or an AI system—from scratch is costly and complex, so Apple is collaborating with external partners for the immediate AI experience while simultaneously developing its own models, including local AI that runs on devices rather than the cloud. This strategy lets Apple lean into its privacy brand without falling behind.
Standalone Siri App
Bloomberg notes a new standalone Siri app will be released, designed to compete directly with chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others. The app will:
- Surface past chat history
- Allow users to upload documents and photos in addition to text
Apple’s Scale Advantage
While ChatGPT has reached 900 million weekly active users, Apple’s installed base across all devices totals 2.5 billion (source: Yahoo Finance). This massive user base gives Apple an unmatched runway to introduce AI to people who have not yet adopted standalone AI tools.
