Rivian launching Apple Watch app with remote controls and Gen 1 digital key feature
Source: 9to5Mac

Overview
Back in December, Rivian released support for using an Apple Watch as a digital key. The EV maker is now launching a dedicated Apple Watch app that adds remote access and control capabilities.
Apple’s digital key feature stores a virtual car key in the Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing users to lock, unlock, and start compatible vehicles such as Rivian’s.
New Features on the Apple Watch
- Remote controls: vent windows, sound the alarm, adjust cabin temperature, and set the charging target.
- Digital key for Gen 1 EVs (2021‑2024): the watch app can act as a standalone digital key. (Gen 2 models 2025+ use the Wallet‑based key.)
- Quick‑access customization: choose up to four shortcuts for the features you use most.
- Digital Crown control: set a target state of charge or adjust cabin temperature with the crown.
Availability
The Apple Watch app is not yet publicly released. RivianTrackr’s 2026.03 software update release notes confirm that the app is coming.
- The app requires Rivian mobile app version 3.9 or later.
- Once the iPhone app is updated to version 3.9, the Apple Watch app will be added automatically.
- To use the watch as a key, you must foreground the Apple Watch app.
Comparison with Competitors
Rivian’s watch app arrives just over a year after Tesla’s own Apple Watch app (see 9to5Mac coverage). Neither automaker currently supports Apple CarPlay, though Tesla is reportedly working on it according to 9to5Mac.
