TL;DR

  • The popular SNES emulator Snes9xTYL for the PSP and PS Vita is being revived after an eight‑year hiatus.
  • A developer has created a modernized, performance‑focused fork of the Super Nintendo emulator.
  • The project brings a slew of improvements, including faster loading, new languages, and a favorites system.

Snes9xTYL is one of the most popular Super Nintendo emulators available for the Sony PSP and PS Vita. The last official update was released on April 4, 2018, eight years ago. A developer has now given the emulator a much‑needed performance boost and several enhancements.

A Reddit user known as Bitter_Cry7001 announced the revival. On the developer’s GitHub page, the project is described as a modernized, performance‑focused fork designed to handle large ROM collections and improve hardware performance. The goal of the revival is “to improve compatibility and performance for specific SNES games over time.”

Improvements

  • Loading speed: Up to 90 % faster. Loading 1,000 ROMs now takes a few seconds instead of ~20 seconds.
  • ROM capacity: Supports up to 4,000 ROMs.
  • Languages: Added Portuguese and Spanish, among others.
  • Favorites system: Allows adding or removing ROMs from a favorites list using the left trigger.

Caution: The developer advises backing up your SAVES and/or S9XTYLSAVES folders before installing the new fork.
