Redis Is “Single‑Threaded”. Or Is It?

What I learned while building the EventStreamMonitor project (≈5 years ago).

TL;DR

  • Command execution (the core work of SET, GET, etc.) runs in a single thread.
  • Everything else – disk I/O, lazy freeing, network I/O, RDB snapshots – can use background threads.
  • The design choice gives Redis its legendary speed, simplicity, and predictability.

1. What is single‑threaded?

Bottom line: Redis is mostly single‑threaded for the part that matters most (command execution), but it does spin up threads where they give a clear benefit.

3. Why a single thread is actually faster

  1. No locking overhead

    • Uncontended locks cost ~100‑1 000 CPU cycles.
    • Contended locks can cost >10 000 cycles.
    • By avoiding locks, Redis eliminates this cost entirely.
  2. Better CPU‑cache usage

    • L1‑cache access ≈ 1 ns vs. main‑memory 60‑100 ns.
    • A single thread keeps hot data in the cache longer, reducing memory latency.
  3. No context‑switching

    • Switching threads forces the OS to save/restore registers, stack, etc.
    • A single thread runs continuously, avoiding that overhead.

4. “Race conditions can’t happen with Redis” – What’s true?

  • Individual commands are atomic.
    A single SET, GET, INCR, … finishes completely before any other command runs.

  • Sequences of commands are not atomic.
    If you issue MULTI/EXEC or just run several commands one after another, other clients can interleave their commands in between. The official docs warn about this.

  • Blocking commands (e.g., BLPOP) do not freeze the server.
    They block only the client connection that issued them; the event loop continues serving other clients.

5. Why not make everything multi‑threaded?

“A thread doing LPUSH needs to serve other threads doing LPOP. There is less to gain, and a lot of complexity to add.”Antirez (Redis creator)

  • Redis data structures (lists, sets, sorted sets, streams) would need fine‑grained locking.
  • Operations like hash rehashing, key expiration, and eviction would become far more complex and error‑prone.
  • The single‑threaded core eliminates an entire class of bugs and keeps the codebase maintainable.

6. Benchmarks & Real‑World Numbers

Key insight: CPU is rarely Redis’s bottleneck; memory bandwidth or network I/O usually are. A single thread is enough to saturate the CPU, so adding more threads for command execution yields diminishing returns.

7. Takeaways (What I learned)

  1. Command execution stays single‑threaded – intentional, not a limitation.
  2. Background threads exist for disk I/O, lazy freeing, and (since 6.0) network I/O.
  3. Atomicity = per‑command, not per‑transaction unless you use MULTI/EXEC.
  4. Blocking commands block only the client, not the whole server.
  5. Performance is already massive; most applications never need more than a few million ops/s per instance.
  6. Design simplicity = reliability – fewer bugs, easier maintenance, predictable latency.
