Qualcomm says its new Snapdragon chips will have less lag on mid-range Android phones

While mid-range Android phones have gotten way better over the years, lag spikes are still remarkably common. With its new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chips, Qualcomm says lag should be cut down alongside several other improvements.

Snapdragon 4 Gen 5

The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 packs a 2+6 core setup consisting of two performance cores at up to 2.4 GHz and six efficiency cores at up to 2.0 GHz. Key features include:

  • Displays: FHD+ up to 144 Hz
  • Connectivity: Sub‑6 GHz 5G, Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) 5G + 5G/4G, Wi‑Fi 5
  • Camera support: Up to 108 MP
  • GPU: 77 % better performance vs. previous generation, with support for 90 Hz gameplay

Snapdragon 6 Gen 5

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 uses a 4+4 core configuration with four performance cores at up to 2.6 GHz and four efficiency cores at up to 2.0 GHz. Highlights include:

  • Displays: FHD+ up to 144 Hz
  • Connectivity: Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, Sub‑6 GHz 5G
  • Camera support: Up to 200 MP, plus AI night‑vision capabilities
  • GPU: 21 % more powerful, supporting the Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 for “smooth, long‑lasting play”

Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI

Both chips introduce Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI, a chipset‑level improvement aimed at delivering lag‑free navigation:

  • Snapdragon 6 Gen 5: 20 % faster app launches, 18 % less screen stutter
  • Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: 43 % faster app launches, 25 % less screen stutter

Device Availability

  • Snapdragon 6 Gen 5: Expected first in devices from Honor and Redmi.
  • Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: Planned for upcoming Oppo, Realme, and Redmi devices.
