TL;DR

  • Proton Mail is making it easier to leave Gmail.
  • A new feature lets you send and receive messages from Gmail directly in Proton Mail.
  • The tool is rolling out gradually.

Introducing Gmail Integration in Proton Mail

Proton Mail announced a new tool that allows you to send emails from your Gmail address directly inside Proton Mail. Incoming messages that land in your Gmail inbox are automatically imported into your Proton Mail inbox, enabling a smoother, more gradual transition to a new email address.

Read the official blog post for full details.

How It Works

  1. Activate the feature – Once the feature becomes available for your account, go to Settings → Import via Easy Switch and connect your Gmail account.
  2. Send from Gmail – Compose a new email in Proton Mail and select your Gmail address as the sender.
  3. Receive in Proton Mail – New messages arriving in Gmail are synced automatically to your Proton Mail inbox.

Why Switch to Proton Mail?

  • Privacy – Proton Mail claims to strip trackers, ads, and spam from incoming emails.
  • End‑to‑end encryption – Emails exchanged with other Proton Mail users are encrypted.
  • Data collection concerns – Proton argues that Google uses Gmail to gather extensive data for ad targeting, describing Gmail as “adware.”

Availability

The Gmail integration feature is being rolled out gradually, so it may not be immediately visible for all users. Keep an eye on your Proton Mail settings; the option will appear when it’s ready for your account.
