Privacy advocates want Google to stop handing consumer data over to ICE
Source: The Verge
Background
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is asking the attorneys general of California and New York to investigate Google for deceptive trade practices, alleging that the tech giant fails to notify users before handing over their data to law‑enforcement agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
EFF’s Claim
“For nearly a decade, Google has promised billions of users that it will notify them before disclosing their personal data to law enforcement,” the letter states.
The EFF says Google did not provide notice in the case of Amandla Thomas‑Johnson, a former PhD candidate at Cornell University, who reports that ICE accessed his university email without any prior notification.
Alleged Pattern
The organization alleges that this incident is not isolated and that similar undisclosed data disclosures have occurred elsewhere.
