Peak Design Travel Backpack 20L – Review

Apparently, a 20 L no‑frills backpack from a brand like Peak Design that knows how to put together a high‑end travel or everyday bag is the backpack I’ve been looking for this whole time.

I’ve reached a point where carrying everything “just in case” has become a chore. Now, I want to bring as little as possible whenever I can, even on photo shoots or press events. I’ve searched for the right bag, and I always justify the 30 L packs as a good middle ground, housing enough pockets for anything I need. Unfortunately, when I want to bring my laptop and a camera, all that extra fabric just weighs me down.

Enter the Peak Design Travel Backpack 20L. To be clear, it isn’t just for travel, and even though I’ve taken flights with it, the bag shines as a default everyday carry.

Size and Expandability

  • Base thickness: ~6 inches
  • Maximum thickness (expanded): 8.4 inches (adds ~3 L of volume)
  • Capacity: 20 L (expandable to ~23 L)

It’s small at just 20 L, but I didn’t realize how much I could actually get away with taking. It’s quite literally one of the smallest backpacks I’ve found that still fits my laptop.

Main Compartment Layout

  • Two internal pockets:
    1. Stretchy organization pocket
    2. Laptop/tablet pocket (fits laptops up to 16 inches and a 10‑inch tablet)
  • Quick‑access top pocket with several dividers for essentials, replacing a separate tech pouch.

I found myself throwing everything I could in there, and still didn’t have space issues because of the way each pocket is laid out. That includes batteries, extra chargers, cables galore, and phones I didn’t need to bring on my day trips.

Camera Compatibility

  • C‑clip loops along the walls for Peak Design camera cubes.
  • I fit my “smedium” camera cube plus a tech pouch, filling the entire interior.
  • The smallest camera cube also fits for a minimal carry.

Travel Experience

Using it as a personal‑item on flights is a game‑changer. After several months, I can’t imagine tucking a larger bag under the seat in front of me. Its compact footprint makes it a joy to fly with.

Build Quality & Weather Resistance

  • Internal fabric: Soft yet durable, no cheap feel.
  • External fabric: Fully recycled Versa Shell 400D nylon (water‑resistant).
  • Bottom panel: 900D weather‑proofing.

During a sudden May rainstorm, the bag protected my gear perfectly—no water seeped in, and the bag handled the wet conditions without issue.

Aesthetically, the bag is modern and understated. Metal buckles, a side handle, and hidden loops for extra straps add functional charm. An internal drink pocket hides when not in use.

Pricing

  • Standard MSRP: $199
  • Kickstarter/early‑bird price: $159 (after which it returns to full price)

Sale alert (as of writing): Peak Design is running an overstock sale with deep discounts until May 30. For example, the Outdoor Backpack is up to $131 off – see the details here.

Verdict

Mentally, it’s hard to justify the price for a 20 L bag, especially when larger travel packs offer more features. However, as an everyday bag it does its job exceptionally well—fitting a laptop, camera cube, tech pouch, and accessories while remaining comfortable on long days.

Yes, I recommend it. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, even if I’m a bit biased.

3L Crossbody Bag – $99.95

A tiny tech pouch with an attached strap. It sounds wild, but it works quite well.

Travel Crossbody

Extremely minimal, featuring the same internal origami‑style organization as the Tech Pouch. Metal buckles provide strength, and a hidden magnetic phone pocket sits on the back. Constructed from recycled Versa Shell 330D fabric—perfect for a no‑nonsense functional sling.

Peak Design 20L Travel Backpack (re‑highlight)

My favorite everyday backpack to date. Not cheap, but one of the best options available for a compact, high‑quality carry solution.
