OpenAI 'pauses' its Stargate UK data center plan
Source: Engadget
Background
OpenAI announced Stargate UK in September as an AI‑infrastructure project in partnership with NVIDIA. The initiative was designed to help the United Kingdom build sovereign computing capabilities, allowing the government to run top AI models locally from data centers within the region—particularly for specialist use cases where jurisdiction matters.
Current Status
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is pausing the Stargate UK project due to the high cost of energy and regulatory challenges. In a statement to the publication, OpenAI said it still sees “huge potential for the UK’s AI future” and that “AI compute is foundational to that goal.” The company added that it will continue to explore Stargate UK and will move forward when conditions such as regulation and energy costs enable long‑term infrastructure investment.
Future Plans
When Stargate UK was announced, OpenAI indicated it would offer a similar deal to other countries seeking to expand their sovereign AI capabilities. The broader OpenAI for Countries initiative is also working with Australia, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, and other regions. It remains unclear whether the pause affecting the UK will also impact these other collaborations.
