TL;DR

  • OpenAI has delayed the launch of “adult mode” for ChatGPT.
  • The company is prioritizing intelligence improvements, personality upgrades, personalization, and a more proactive experience.
  • “Adult mode” is still planned, but its release will take more time.

Background

In October 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed a future version of ChatGPT that would “treat adult users like adults,” part of a broader rollout of age‑gating tools. These tools would relax certain restrictions, including allowing erotica for verified adults.

In February, Android Authority uncovered evidence of a “Naughty chats” feature being developed for the upcoming adult mode, though no launch date had been confirmed at that time.

Delay Announcement

An OpenAI spokesperson told Sources’s Alex Heath (via Engadget) that the launch of adult mode is being postponed. The delay is not due to technical roadblocks but rather a shift in priorities:

“We’re pushing out the launch of adult mode so we can focus on work that is a higher priority for more users right now,” the spokesperson said, citing gains in intelligence, personality improvements, personalization, and a more proactive experience.

Despite the postponement, OpenAI remains interested in releasing adult mode, though the spokesperson acknowledged that adding it will “take more time.”

Timeline

  • December 2025: Altman’s social post indicated a target release for adult mode.
  • Q1 2026: An OpenAI executive later suggested the feature would land in the first quarter of 2026 (The Verge).
  • Current status (early 2026): No official update has been provided, and the delay suggests the rollout is still some way off.
