The next “G” is on the horizon. The standard formally known as 6G is still being defined, but it will be a major topic of discussion at Mobile World Congress 2026, which kicks off today in Barcelona.
5G arrived in 2019, yet many of the promised breakthroughs—robotic surgeons and streets filled with autonomous vehicles—have yet to become commonplace. As with previous generations, 5G continues to evolve through new “releases” every few years, delivering incremental progress that often falls short of the hype.
