New Regulations Allow Tickets for Driverless Cars
Autonomous vehicles roving California’s roads will no longer be immune to traffic tickets starting on July 1. The California DMV announced updated regulations that permit law enforcement to issue a “notice of AV noncompliance” to manufacturers when one of their driverless cars commits a traffic violation—such as running a red light or failing to stop for a school bus.
The rule change follows years of high‑profile traffic violations and multiple safety investigations involving robotaxis. Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving (FSD) system is also under investigation for running red lights and driving in the wrong direction.
