Nintendo sues the US government for a refund on tariffs
Source: TechCrunch
Background
Nintendo filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government on Friday over tariffs imposed on global businesses. The gaming giant is seeking a refund for duties it paid as a result of President Donald Trump’s executive orders that invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The case was filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade after a Supreme Court decision struck down the tariffs that the president had imposed under IEEPA, finding that he exceeded his authority.
Legal Action
More than a thousand other companies have already sued for refunds on the tariffs they paid. According to Nintendo’s complaint, viewed by TechCrunch, these tariffs have resulted in the collection of over $200 billion on imports in total.
Nintendo’s Statement
“We can confirm that we have filed a request,” Nintendo told TechCrunch. “We have nothing else to share on the topic.”
Political Context
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision — which he called “extraordinarily anti‑American” — President Trump raised tariffs from 10 % to 15 %. Twenty‑four states have now sued, arguing that the president has again overstepped the limits of his power by making this change.
