Anthropic partners with SpaceX for access to Colossus 1 supercomputer
Anthropic announced in a press release on Wednesday that it has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to use the company’s massive Colossus 1 data center. According to a corresponding announcement from SpaceX AI, the deal gives Anthropic access to the entire supercomputer—over 222,000 Nvidia GPUs, including powerful H100 and H200 chips, as well as next‑generation GB200 accelerator systems, and 300 MW+ of compute power.
Impact on Claude services
Anthropic says the additional capacity will improve the experience for paid Claude users—Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers—through three key changes:
- Claude Code: Five‑hour rate limits have doubled for all paid tiers.
- Peak‑hour limits: The reduction for Pro and Max tiers has been removed.
- API limits: Rate limits and request volume for Claude Opus models have been “considerably” raised.
Background on Colossus 1
The Colossus 1 deal means that the first‑generation cluster, originally built to power xAI’s own Grok models, is now powering one of its direct AI rivals while SpaceX focuses on building Colossus 2. In an X post, Musk said he approved leasing Colossus 1 to Anthropic after meeting with senior members of the company to “understand what they do to ensure Claude is good for humanity.” He added that he was impressed, noting, “No one set off my evil detector.” This marks a reversal from earlier comments in which Musk described Claude as “misanthropic and evil.”
