PS5 Linux Loader
Developer and modder Andy Nguyen has released a loader on GitHub that enables Linux to run on PlayStation 5 consoles equipped with a disc drive and running firmware 3.xx or 4.xx. Nguyen mentioned that support for additional firmware versions may be added later, though it isn’t a current priority.
A video of the loader in action was posted last month:
I ported Linux to the PS5 and turned it into a Steam Machine. Running GTA 5 Enhanced with Ray Tracing. 🤯

Growing Interest in Linux
2026 has seen a surge of enthusiasm for Linux:
- The French government announced it will drop Windows in favor of Linux to reduce reliance on foreign‑made technology. (Engadget article)
- Valve’s SteamOS continues to attract attention as a gaming platform, though it still faces challenges such as Linux‑based anti‑cheat compatibility.
Historical Context: PlayStation 3 and OtherOS
Running Linux on a Sony console isn’t new. During the PlayStation 3 era, Sony offered an OtherOS feature that let users install alternative operating systems, including Linux. This capability was removed in the 3.21 firmware update, prompting a class‑action lawsuit. Sony eventually settled, allowing affected users to claim $55 in compensation.
