Taskbar Customization

Microsoft is testing long‑requested Windows 11 customization options, including a resizable taskbar, smaller taskbar buttons, and the ability to move the taskbar to any screen edge.

Starting with Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8493, users can:

  • Enable a small taskbar that shows smaller icons and a shorter bar, freeing up vertical space for apps.
  • Move the taskbar to the bottom, top, left, or right side of the screen.

“The ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen has been one of the most requested features, and we are bringing it to Windows 11,” said Diego Baca, partner director of Microsoft Design.
“With this update, when small taskbar is enabled, you get smaller icons, a shorter taskbar, and more vertical space for your apps. No restart or sign‑out is required.”

Start Menu Enhancements

Microsoft is also rolling out changes that give users more control over the Start menu:

  • Toggle off recommended content and customize the menu’s size.
  • Choose to display only pinned apps, or include Recommended and All apps sections.

“These controls are designed to work together. If you want a Start menu with just your pinned apps, you can turn off Recommended and All,” added Diego Baca.
“If you want a full Start that shows everything, you can leave it all on. The goal is simple: it is your choice, and it should be easy to make.”

Microsoft will still maintain a list of recently installed apps, as this helps users discover new applications alongside the Microsoft Store.

Additional privacy options include the ability to hide the user’s name and profile picture from the Start menu.

File Relevance and Privacy

The upcoming update will improve file relevance by adjusting how files are displayed and ordered, prioritizing the most relevant items. This aims to make it easier for users to locate the files they need quickly.

Other Upcoming Improvements

  • Reduced notifications to lessen interruptions.
  • Simplified Settings interface for a more intuitive experience.
  • Fewer reboots required during device setup on new Windows PCs.
  • Enhanced Windows Search for a consistent experience across the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, and Settings.
