Notepad Update Removes Copilot Branding

Microsoft has rolled out a Notepad update for Windows Insiders that removes the Copilot branding and icon from within the app, as reported by Windows Central. The old Copilot menu has been replaced with “writing tools,” which are still powered by AI and are essentially identical to the previous selection. The Copilot button has been swapped for a pen icon. Additionally, mentions of AI have been removed from the Settings menu, and the option to disable the AI‑powered writing tools is now located in the “Advanced features” section.

Broader Rollback of Copilot Branding

The company first announced that it was dialing back its Copilot branding last month, likely in response to criticism that the AI assistant is being forced on users and does not provide a consistent experience across applications.

“You will see us be more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows,” said Windows and Devices EVP Pavan Davuluri.

Microsoft has pledged to remove “unnecessary Copilot entry points,” starting with Notepad, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Widgets. According to The Verge, the Copilot button has already been removed from the Snipping Tool when selecting capture areas. These changes indicate progress in eliminating visual reminders of Copilot from Microsoft’s apps.

Outlook

The ongoing removal of Copilot branding suggests a shift toward a more selective and user‑controlled integration of AI features across Windows 11.
