Overview

Micron has begun mass production of the 9650 series, the industry’s first PCIe 6.0 SSD. It delivers sequential read speeds up to 28 GB/s and random read performance of 5.5 million IOPS, roughly double the throughput of the fastest PCIe 5.0 drives available today.

Specifications

  • Interface: PCIe 6.0
  • Sequential Read: Up to 28 GB/s
  • Random Read: Up to 5.5 M IOPS
  • Power Draw: 25 W (same as high‑end PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSDs)

Variants & Form Factors

The 9650 series is offered in two form factors—E1.S and E3.S—and two variants:

VariantCapacityEndurance (TBW)Target Workload
ProUp to 30.72 TB56,064 TBWGeneral AI and data‑center workloads
MaxUp to 25.6 TB140,160 TBWEndurance‑oriented workloads

Both variants share the same peak sequential and random speeds but differ in mixed‑workload performance and endurance ratings.

Cooling Options

The 9650 series is Micron’s first SSD to support liquid cooling in addition to traditional air cooling, providing flexibility for high‑density data‑center deployments.

Market Outlook

Consumer platforms are not expected to adopt PCIe 6.0 until 2030, positioning the 9650 series primarily for AI and data‑center applications.
