Layoffs Announcement

MercurySteam announced that it will undergo a “workforce adjustment process.” The Spain‑based studio, best known for Metroid Dread (2021) and Metroid: Samus Returns (2017), posted the notice on LinkedIn.

The post does not specify the scope of the cuts or give a reason for making them. LinkedIn lists the company as having between 251–500 employees.

Uncertainty for the Studio

It is unclear what the layoffs will mean for MercurySteam’s future. The timing is notable because the studio is slated to launch its latest game, Blades of Fire on Steam, in just two days.

Shortly after Blades of Fire debuted on consoles last year, the studio made headlines for allegations of toxic culture.

Industry Context

Layoffs have unfortunately become commonplace in a struggling games industry, and MercurySteam’s announcement adds to the growing list of recent reductions.
