TL;DR

  • Metro by T‑Mobile quietly upgraded its top‑tier plan over the weekend.
  • Previously, users were capped at 70 GB of premium data before it dropped to a lower priority; now there is no firm cap at all.
  • The top‑tier plan is now an even better value, especially when adding multiple lines.

Unlimited Premium Data Added

Metro by T‑Mobile has joined the small group of prepaid carriers that offer truly unlimited premium data. The change was announced on Reddit, noting that the premium data cap has been removed for the carrier’s top‑tier plan.

Like most carriers, T‑Mobile uses different priority levels for different plans. Metro previously used QCI 7 for premium access, then dropped to the lower‑tier QCI 9 after users exceeded their premium caps. With the update, top‑tier subscribers will no longer encounter the previous 70 GB firm cap.

Users who consume excessive data could still see further priority changes if Metro deems the behavior irregular, but typical usage should remain unaffected unless you’re regularly consuming a terabyte or more. The unlimited premium data applies only to cellular connectivity; the hotspot limit remains at 25 GB.

Performance Context

It’s also worth noting that Metro’s premium data is still a tier below the QCI 8 access provided with postpaid T‑Mobile or Google Fi plans. However, the performance gap between QCI 7 and QCI 8 on T‑Mobile’s network is not massive.

Pricing Impact

Overall, this is a modest but meaningful upgrade. The plan is most attractive for larger families: a single line is still more expensive than alternatives like Visible, but a family of four can enjoy the plan for $35 per line (down from the $60 starting cost for a single line).
