Overview

Meta will start showing parents the topics their teens have discussed with Meta AI over the previous seven days.

Feature Overview

Meta explains that “parents will be able to see the topics their teen has been asking Meta AI about in Facebook, Messenger or Instagram over the past week.” Topics can include School, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Travel, Writing, Health and Well‑being, among others.

The feature appears in a new Insights tab within the supervision tools, both in‑app and on the web. Parents can tap a topic to view its sub‑categories—for example, Lifestyle breaks down into fashion, food, and holidays, while Health and Well‑being includes fitness, physical health, and mental health.

Conversation Starters

Meta worked with the Cyberbullying Research Center to develop “conversation starters,” which are open‑ended prompts designed to help parents discuss their teen’s AI experiences. The prompts are available on the Family Center website and can also be accessed via a link in the new Insights tab.

AI Wellbeing Expert Council

Meta disclosed more detail about its AI Wellbeing Expert Council, which will provide ongoing input on the AI experience for teens. The council combines three existing advisory groups with new members who have expertise in responsible and ethical AI, including affiliations with the National Council of Suicide Prevention and several universities. Meta also maintains a separate oversight board that addresses topics ranging from AI to content moderation.

Context and Concerns

Meta’s move comes amid growing scrutiny of AI’s impact on young users. Several countries, such as Spain, have banned social‑media platforms for children under 16 due to safety concerns. Notable incidents include:

  • A tragic case in Canada where a teen received detailed instructions from OpenAI’s ChatGPT on how to carry out a school shooting.
  • An ongoing investigation in Florida into similar AI‑related risks.
  • Multiple reports linking AI interactions to teen suicides.

Meta has also been shifting moderation responsibilities from third‑party vendors to advanced AI systems, further emphasizing the need for parental oversight.
