Meta turned Threads algorithm complaints into an official feature

Background
Threads users have been complaining about the platform’s recommendation algorithm almost since its launch. The criticism eventually turned into a meme, with users posting “Dear algorithm” messages asking to see more content on topics they actually care about.
New Feature
Meta is now turning those “Dear algorithm” posts into an official feature that lets Threads users tune their recommendations in real time. Users can create a post that starts with “dear algo” to adjust their feed preferences.
-
Example for more content:
dear algo, show me more posts about cute cats. -
Example for less content:
dear algo, stop showing me posts about sick pets.
How It Works
- Tracking requests: All “dear algo” requests are listed in the app’s settings, where users can revisit or delete them.
- Sharing requests: Users can share (retweet) other people’s “dear algo” posts, causing those topics to be reflected in their own feed.
- Temporary effect: Each request lasts for three days before expiring, keeping the algorithm’s behavior fresh and flexible.
Rollout
The feature was tested in a limited rollout late last year. It is now available to Threads users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, with additional countries slated to receive it soon.
