Meta’s acquisition of Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI)
Meta has purchased Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a startup focused on building artificial intelligence for robots to tackle “critical challenges” in high‑value labor markets. While Meta already develops robot hardware and AI internally, a spokesperson told Bloomberg that ARI will add deep expertise in model design, frontier capabilities for robot control, and self‑learning for whole‑body humanoid control. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Statements from ARI’s founders
- In a post on X, co‑founder Xiaolong Wang explained that the company’s goal from the start was “training a truly general‑purpose physical agent.” He now believes the agent will be humanoid, with scaling driven by learning directly from human experience. Wang noted that Meta has access to the “key components needed to make this vision possible.”
- Co‑founders Xuxin Cheng and Lerrel Pinto will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs. Pinto previously co‑founded Fauna Robotics, which was acquired by Amazon for its humanoid robot project.
Meta’s broader robotics strategy
Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth (as of 2025) stated that the company aims to create software that other firms can license, similar to Google’s Android model. He emphasized that “software is the bottleneck,” and outlined a roadmap that begins with software for a dexterous hand before expanding to full‑body capabilities.
Industry context
- Amazon is also investing heavily in humanoid robotics.
- Tesla has repurposed its Fremont factory, previously used for Model S and Model X production, to manufacture Optimus humanoid robots.
