Sales Overview

Framework began shipping its new Laptop 13 Pro this week, and the Ubuntu variant is outselling the Windows variant, reports PC World:

“It’s selling quickly by Framework’s internal metrics, with six batches of the Intel version of the laptop already sold out.”
A later Framework social‑media post added: “Spoke too soon, we’re onto Batch 8.”

The company also highlighted that the Ubuntu configurations are outselling the Windows ones.

Why Linux Is Gaining Traction

  1. Bring‑Your‑Own‑OS Preference – Many buyers of a Framework laptop opt for the “None (bring your own)” option, even if they intend to install Windows 11 later, because it’s easy to obtain Windows elsewhere at low cost. Framework notes that this option isn’t counted in the Ubuntu sales numbers.

  2. Limited Linux‑Pre‑Loaded Options – There are only a few vendors that sell new laptops with Linux pre‑installed: Framework, smaller players such as System76 and Slimbook, and a handful of Dell models. (Lenovo previously offered Ubuntu‑loaded laptops but they are not currently listed.)

  3. Microsoft’s Recent Positioning – Windows has been on an “apology tour” after a push for AI features that many users rejected, including the Copilot‑style integration. Microsoft is now scaling back those features and promising improvements that have been missing since Windows 10, which may be nudging buyers toward Linux alternatives.

Additional Findings

  • MacBook Pro Replacements – More than one‑third of purchasers say they are replacing a MacBook Pro, and almost all of them are switching to Linux, according to an optional post‑purchase survey.

  • Keyboard Preference – Sales data shows that the Gray/Black keyboard variant is vastly outselling the traditional Black keyboard.
