Lawsuit Overview

Pop Mart, the Chinese‑based toymaker behind the “Labubu” line, has filed a lawsuit against Bambu Lab and its MakerWorld file‑sharing platform for alleged IP infringement involving knock‑off Labubu 3D‑printing files. The trial is scheduled for April 2. The case seeks to hold the platform responsible for the copyright violations committed by its users. Bambu Lab did not create or upload any of the Labubu models.

History of IP Infringement in 3D Printing

For years, IP infringement in the 3‑printing community has existed in a morally gray area, with many makers and companies treating “fan art” as harmless fun. However, notable DMCA takedowns have occurred, such as:

  • Disney’s removal of Star Wars models from Thingiverse.
  • Honda’s demand that anything bearing its name be removed from Prusa’s Printables.
  • The 3D Benchy’s derivatives being pulled after a change in ownership.

MakerWorld Takedown Incident

In response to the lawsuit, Bambu Lab removed every Labubu knock‑off toy, keychain, fidget, and cookie cutter from MakerWorld. The automated action mistakenly delisted dozens of unrelated files, including printer mods, cable clips, and paint‑brush holders.

A Reddit thread questioned why Pop Mart’s request led to the removal of unrelated locksmithing tools. Bambu Lab replied:

“After looking into this with the relevant team, we’ve learned that some models were accidentally delisted due to an operational error on MakerWorld. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

We’d also like to let everyone know that most of the affected models have now been restored. If your model is still missing, please submit a support ticket so our team can help resolve it for you as quickly as possible.”

Similar complaints appeared on Bambu Lab’s community forum, where users reported innocent models being caught in the mass takedown.

Market Impact and Pop Mart Strategy

The Labubu hype is waning. Reports indicate that Pop Mart’s stock has fallen as the craze subsides, suggesting the company may be doubling down on counterfeit—potentially even comical 3D‑printed—items to revive the brand. While Labubu’s story may be ending, Pop Mart is promoting another plush, Hirono, which has already been spotted traveling with BTS member V (Kim Taehyung).
