Kobo ereaders are integrating with Goodreads alternative StoryGraph

Overview

Kobo has announced plans to integrate its e‑readers and reading apps with the social reading platform StoryGraph in June. StoryGraph is an independent alternative to Goodreads that exists outside of Amazon’s ecosystem and offers users more control over their recommendations.
“For a lot of us, the best part of reading is the community. It’s a part of how we show up in the world as readers every day,” said Rakuten Kobo CEO Michael Tamblyn. “That’s why I’m so excited about our integration with StoryGraph. We wanted to strip away the friction between finishing a chapter and tracking and sharing your progress. Now, Kobo readers can do exactly that, seamlessly.”
Integration Details
- Launch date: June (2024)
- Automatic sync: Kobo e‑readers and reading apps will sync with connected StoryGraph accounts.
- Progress tracking: Updates book progress percentages, adds currently reading titles to StoryGraph’s In Progress shelf, and marks finished books as Read.
- Audiobooks: The sync works for audiobooks listened to through Kobo’s platform as well.
What It Means for Users
- Seamless community experience: Readers can share progress and join discussions without manual entry.
- Greater control: StoryGraph’s recommendation engine is independent of Amazon, giving users more personalized suggestions.
- Cross‑device consistency: Progress is reflected across Kobo devices and the StoryGraph web/app interface.
Other Kobo Integrations
Kobo already supports several third‑party services:
- Instapaper: Save and read web articles directly on Kobo devices.
