Jony Ive Ferrari interior (shown) might be a glimpse of the Apple Car that never was

Background

Jony Ive would have spent years working on the design of the Apple Car interior before the project was abandoned. While those designs will likely never be seen, the upcoming electric Ferrari Luce, whose cockpit was designed by Ive’s consultancy Lovefrom, offers a glimpse of the aesthetic that might have appeared in an Apple vehicle.

Design Details

A walk‑through of the Ferrari Luce interior was shared by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, with Engadget’s Tim Stevens highlighting several similarities to Apple’s design language:

  • The overall aesthetic is dominated by “squircles” and circles, emphasizing minute perfection and symmetry.
  • About 40 pieces of Corning Gorilla Glass are scattered throughout the cockpit, from the shifter surround to the slightly convex lenses in the gauge cluster.
  • Non‑glass elements are primarily aluminum, anodized in three color options: gray, dark gray, and rose gold.

Playful Elements

One notable feature is the key: it has a yellow panel with an E‑Ink background. When the key is inserted into the magnetized receiver in the center console, the yellow dimly glows and moves to illuminate the top of the glass shifter, symbolizing a “transference of life.”

Remarks from Ive

During his introduction, Ive made a candid comment that drew laughter from the audience:

“Part of my grumpy belligerence now is I’m done working with assholes.”

Jeremy White of Wired noted this remark as a perhaps indiscreet moment in Ive’s presentation.

Photos and Video

Engadget provides a collection of photos of the Ferrari Luce interior. You can also watch Ferrari’s teaser video (which does not show the interior) for additional context.
