It's outright war for the Iron Throne in House of the Dragon S3 teaser
Source: Ars Technica
Spoilers for the first two seasons
Background
The series is set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when dragons still roamed Westeros. It chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen’s reign. The primary source material is Fire and Blood—a fictional history of the Targaryen kings written by George R.R. Martin. As readers of the book know, these events culminated in a civil war and the extinction of the dragons—at least until Daenerys Targaryen appeared.
Season 1 recap
- King Viserys (Paddy Considine) dies.
- His second wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke) conspires with her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) to crown her eldest son Aegon (Tom Glynn‑Carney) instead of Viserys’s declared heir, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy).
- Although Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, she appears to consider the Hightower conditions for a concession.
- The arrogant Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Alicent’s younger son, attacks Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). Both dragonriders lose control of their dragons; Aemond’s massive dragon Vhagar devours Lucerys and his dragon Arrax mid‑air.
- The season ends with Rhaenyra and her husband/uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) receiving the devastating news, dashing hopes for a peaceful resolution.
Season 2 recap
House of the Dragon continues its deliberate focus on political maneuvering, punctuated by bursts of brutal violence. The season opens with the infamous “Blood and Cheese” incident (well‑known to book readers): assassins sent to kill Aemond for Lucerys’s death mistakenly slaughter Aegon’s eldest son.
- Several dragons and supporting characters die in the ensuing chaos.
- Aegon is gravely wounded, allowing Aemond to become regent, with no intention of relinquishing the Iron Throne.
Teaser for Season 3
