TL;DR

  • ChatGPT may soon let you upload a “reference photo” of you.
  • This would allow you to generate trendy images using ChatGPT much more quickly.
  • You will also be able to replace or delete your images after uploading them once.

AI‑generated images have birthed countless social media trends, and you’ve probably tried a few of them. ChatGPT’s dedicated Images section, as well as Google Photos’ Remix and Create with AI features, make it easier to recreate your pictures in trending styles. The remaining friction point is the need to add your images every time you generate a new one.

A possible solution

OpenAI appears to be working on an option to add a Reference photo that you can reuse for image generation in ChatGPT. Once added, you won’t need to upload an image for each new avatar or trend.

We discovered a new flow for adding the reference photo in version 1.2026.104 beta of the ChatGPT Android app. The feature is currently inactive and hidden in the code, but we were able to activate it with some under‑the‑hood tweaking.

How it would work

  • The option is expected to live under ChatGPT’s Memories section (see here).
  • You can choose an existing photo from your phone’s gallery or capture a new selfie.
  • After uploading, the reference photo can be viewed, replaced, or removed via a trash icon.
  • Unlike other memories, ChatGPT may not automatically recall your photo from previous chats.

We were able to enable the interface for adding a reference photo, but ChatGPT did not actually use it to generate new images. This suggests further development is needed before the feature becomes functional.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict future features based on work‑in‑progress code, but predicted features may not reach a public release.
