TL;DR

  • The Galaxy S26 Ultra’s Privacy Display is a hardware‑level feature that controls light dispersion at the pixel level to hide screen content.
  • Physical privacy screen protectors offer better side‑angle “blackout,” but they permanently dim the screen and have a rougher matte texture.
  • Samsung’s solution lets you toggle privacy for specific apps or screen areas, providing a superior overall experience despite a slight privacy trade‑off.

What is the Privacy Display?

One of the biggest selling points of the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the new Privacy Display feature. It works at the hardware level, controlling how light is dispersed by each pixel to make the screen content harder to see from side angles.

The Test

My colleague C. Scott Brown applied an expensive, branded privacy screen protector to a Galaxy S25 Ultra and compared it with the Privacy Display on a Galaxy S26 Ultra. The full video can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/2F8bYPnDb1s.

Findings

  • Privacy screen protector:

    • Provides stronger side‑angle blackout.
    • Darkens the entire display, reducing brightness for movies, photos, and general use.
    • Has a matte texture that feels less smooth to the touch.
    • Is a one‑time installation; you cannot turn it off when you don’t need it.
  • Privacy Display (S26 Ultra):

    • Slightly less effective at blocking side‑angle viewing.
    • Does not dim the screen when disabled.
    • Allows software toggling on/off and can be applied to specific apps or even specific screen regions.
    • Retains the smooth feel of bare glass.

  • MSRP: $1,299.99
  • 6.9‑inch 10‑bit display, 200 MP main camera, upgraded zoom, advanced 8K video, and exclusive AI tools.

Verdict

Even though the Privacy Display is a bit less effective at blocking prying eyes than a dedicated privacy screen protector, it offers a far more enjoyable and flexible user experience. Most users will find it sufficient, while those who need maximum privacy at all times may still prefer a physical protector.

Availability

The hardware‑level Privacy Display is exclusive to the Galaxy S26 Ultra and will not be back‑ported to the base S26 or S26 Plus. Other Android manufacturers are reportedly testing similar hardware solutions, but they are unlikely to appear until later this year.
