iOS 27 concept

Overview

In today’s edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared new details about Apple’s upcoming software release: iOS 27. The company aims to “tidy” its codebase, upgrade older apps, and tweak Liquid Glass, with the hope of improving battery life.

It’s been previously reported that iOS 27 would focus on performance improvements and stability. Today’s report adds three key details on how Apple plans to achieve that.

Key Details

  • Removing “scraps” of old code
  • Some interface tweaks, but nothing massive
  • Subtly upgrading old apps to let them perform better

Gurman describes iOS as “a bit of a mess under the hood.” Users have noticed an uptick in bugs, occasional poor performance, and reduced battery life in recent years.

Battery Life Improvements

With this code cleanup, engineers are also working toward better battery efficiency. Apple hopes that the underlying code changes will result in efficiency gains that give users more juice, though it’s unclear whether the company will market these changes explicitly.

AI Enhancements

Apple is also focusing on improving its AI features in iOS 27. Recently, Bloomberg reported that some of Apple’s key Siri promises made at WWDC 2024 would be delayed to iOS 27. Apple is reportedly working on a Siri chatbot for iOS 27, with more AI enhancements likely to appear as the June keynote approaches.
