🖤 Introducing *Grayscale Webpages*: A Simpler, Calmer Way to Browse
Source: Dev.to
Introduction
Do you ever feel your screen is too colorful—like every website is shouting for your attention?
Grayscale Webpages is a lightweight Chrome extension that turns any site instantly black‑and‑white, helping your eyes and focus rest.
How it works
- Once installed, Grayscale Webpages adds a single button to Chrome’s toolbar.
- Clicking the button applies a minimalist CSS
filter: grayscale(100%)to the current tab, turning the entire page grayscale instantly. - Clicking again removes the filter and restores color.
The extension injects only this CSS filter, affecting the current tab without requiring additional permissions, analytics, ads, or tracking.
Benefits
- Reduced eye strain – softer contrast and less visual noise.
- Improved focus – removes distracting colors from news feeds and social media.
- Mindful browsing – helps separate “fun scrolling” from “intentional reading.”
- Developer tool – quickly check a design’s grayscale contrast and accessibility.
Bonus tip
You can pair Grayscale Webpages with “Dark Mode” or “Reading Mode” extensions to create a distraction‑free digital environment for deep work or nighttime reading.
Installation
Install Grayscale Webpages on the Chrome Web Store
- Add the extension to Chrome.
- Click the toolbar button to toggle grayscale on or off.
