New Content Ranking Guidelines
Serial Instagram re‑uploaders are about to be hit hard in the algorithm, as the platform announces new content ranking guidelines intended to boost original content creators.
Accounts that primarily aggregate or repost others’ content without meaningful alterations or additions will no longer be recommended to other users, according to a recent Creators blog post. The same algorithmic guidelines were introduced for Reels uploads in 2024 and will now apply to photos and carousel posts as well.
Definition of “Original Content”
Instagram defines “original content” as work that you wholly created or that reflects your unique perspective. This includes:
- Original photos and designs
- Third‑party content that is materially edited by the user
Examples given in the blog post:
- Adding unique text directly on the content that provides more context than a simple caption
- Adding creative graphics that offer new information
- Using Instagram’s remix feature to transform the original material
Recommendations for Aggregator Accounts
To avoid being marked ineligible for recommendations, accounts that frequently reshare content should:
- Share other users’ posts to their Stories
- Use the repost button
- Enable Collab posts
Restoring Eligibility
Aggregator accounts flagged as ineligible can regain recommendation status by pivoting to original posts. Instagram states that most of an account’s posts, carousels, and Reels need to feature original content over a 30‑day period for the decision to be reversed. Users can also:
- Remove unoriginal content
- Appeal the decision through Instagram’s support channels
