If Stack Overflow Dies, What Will Train the Next LLMs?

Introduction

I was looking at Stack Overflow usage, and the number of new questions posted in a year dropped by 78 % after large language models (LLMs) became widely available.

If everyone starts relying on LLMs instead of Stack Overflow for answers, and if no one is answering questions on Stack Overflow or any other Q&A platform, a feedback loop could begin.

How LLMs Learn

LLMs such as ChatGPT are trained on massive text datasets that include:

  • Documentation
  • Open‑source code
  • Q&A sites like Stack Overflow
  • Forums and blogs

All of this content is written by humans. As the pool of new, human‑generated material shrinks, the models will increasingly rely on older content—or even on their own generated outputs. This can gradually reduce originality, much like “drinking from the same glass of water repeatedly” until the knowledge becomes stale.

Potential Consequences

  • Initial growth: LLMs will continue improving with the existing data (documentation, repositories, research papers).
  • Diminishing new information: Over time, the flow of fresh, human‑created knowledge may shrink, leading to more repetitive or outdated answers.
  • Loss of human spark: The dynamic, evolving nature of knowledge could be dampened without continuous human contribution.

Looking Ahead

When the novelty of LLM‑generated answers wanes, people may return to the “good old way” of sharing knowledge organically—through forums, Q&A sites, and other human‑driven platforms. AI performs best when humans keep creating fresh knowledge for it to learn from.

A possible equilibrium could emerge where humans, machines, and learning feed each other:

  1. Humans produce new content.
  2. LLMs ingest and disseminate that content.
  3. Users rely on both human expertise and AI assistance.

If this balance collapses, the reliance on LLMs might become obsolete, prompting a revival of traditional knowledge‑sharing methods—perhaps not soon, but eventually.
