I tested Google Docs' new AI audio summaries, and they're a massive time-saver
Source: ZDNet

Overview
Google Docs now includes a “Listen to document summary” feature that uses Gemini AI to generate a short, spoken synopsis of your document. A floating mini‑player lets you pause, restart, adjust playback speed, and switch between different voices, making it easy to consume summaries while multitasking.
“Audio summaries provide a short verbal synopsis of the contents in your document, including multiple tabs,” Google explained in its Feb. 12 blog post announcing the feature. “These summaries are typically under a few minutes long, and use a natural speaking style to help you catch up quickly and efficiently.”
Availability
The audio‑summary skill is limited to users with a paid Google Workspace subscription. Eligible plans include:
- Business Standard and Plus
- Enterprise Standard and Plus
- Google AI Ultra for Business add‑on
- Google AI Pro for Education add‑on
- Google AI Pro and Ultra
The feature is still rolling out, so it may take several days after the official launch for it to appear in your Docs.
How to Use
Enable the feature
- Sign in to the Google Docs website with your browser.
- Open the document you want summarized.
- From the Tools menu, select Audio → Listen to document summary (if the option is available).

- Browse the list of voice styles (e.g., Educator, Narrator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, Motivator).
- Click the Play button next to a voice to preview it.
- When you find a preferred voice, click Select; playback restarts from the beginning.
