Introduction
As a former iPhone 14 Pro Max user, I felt my three‑year‑old device gave me everything I needed—until I traded it in for an iPhone 17 Pro Max late last year. Sure, the older phone still had a Lightning port and didn’t support Apple Intelligence, but I worked around those minor inconveniences with a MagSafe charger and ChatGPT.
Truth be told, the Apple Intelligence features haven’t wowed me enough to justify spending $1,000 on a newer iPhone.

A few notable upgrades, however, made the switch worthwhile:
- Improved camera array – better for group selfies and distant photos.
- A19 Pro chip – faster performance and efficiency.
- Enhanced scratch resistance – survives the roughness of kids and pets.
If you’re wondering whether it’s time to upgrade from your three‑year‑old iPhone 14 Pro, here’s how to decide.
You Should Buy the iPhone 17 Pro If…

1. You Want the Best iPhone Camera
The iPhone 17 Pro (and Pro Max) are exceptional tools for content creators:
- All three rear cameras are upgraded to 48 MP.
- The telephoto lens now offers up to 8× optical zoom, the longest zoom ever on an iPhone.
- The front‑facing camera is 18 MP and supports Center Stage, which uses AI to automatically frame your selfies and expand the field of view.
- The selfie sensor is square (instead of 4:3), so you can shoot portraits or landscapes without rotating the phone.
- Dual Capture lets you record ultra‑stabilized video from both the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

2. You Want More Processing Power
- Powered by the A19 Pro chip – Apple’s most powerful and efficient processor to date.
- Up to 40 % faster CPU performance than the iPhone 14 Pro and twice the GPU speed.
- New internal architecture includes a vapor‑chamber cooling system (de‑ionised water sealed and laser‑welded into the aluminium chassis).
- Switching from titanium to aluminium improves heat dissipation and allows a larger battery, delivering up to 10 extra hours of video playback compared with the iPhone 14 Pro.

3. You Want Top‑of‑the‑Line Connectivity
- The new N1 wireless networking chip supports Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.1, and Thread.
- Improved reliability for Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.

You don’t mind missing out on Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence isn’t a game‑changer yet. Android devices are already ahead in AI features, so it’s not worth buying a new iPhone just for Apple’s AI suite. The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro may have a stronger AI column, but you shouldn’t base your purchase on it alone.- Siri is still on its original version; it can hand off requests to ChatGPT when it thinks the chatbot can help better.
- You can add ChatGPT as a Siri shortcut – see ZDNet’s guide on how to use ChatGPT as a Siri shortcut.
- You can even program the Action Button to summon ChatGPT’s voice assistant – read the tutorial here.
That said, Apple Intelligence does include useful tools such as Live Translation, Visual Intelligence, Writing Tools, etc. Gemini‑based enhancements for Siri may arrive later in 2026 – details on the upcoming upgrade.

You’re okay with the Lightning port
The iPhone 14 series is the last to use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector. Starting with the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple switched to USB‑C, which offers a universal charging solution and reduces reliance on a closed ecosystem. -
Saving money is your priority
If your iPhone 14 Pro still works well for browsing, texting, and casual photography, holding out for a newer model can be a smart move. The 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max continue to receive iOS 26 updates, support Wi‑Fi 6, and feature a solid 48‑MP rear camera (though without 8× optical zoom) plus the Dynamic Island.
