Apple's Johny Srouji

Leadership changes at Apple

Last month, Apple announced a series of major leadership changes, including that John Ternus will take over as Apple CEO effective September 1. At the same time, Apple also elevated Johny Srouji into a broader role as the company’s chief hardware officer.

Bloomberg now reports that Srouji is making a series of changes to “speed up work on future devices.” In addition to accelerating product development, his goal is to “better integrate teams working on in‑house silicon with those creating products.”

Restructuring product design

Mark Gurman has the details on the biggest change:

  • Management shift – Responsibility for product design (engineering the look, feel, and main capabilities of Apple’s devices) is moving from veteran VP Kate Bergeron to two of her longtime deputies, Shelly Goldberg and Dave Pakula.
    • Goldberg already oversees product design for the Mac.
    • Pakula has led the effort for the Apple Watch, iPad, and AirPods.
  • iPhone focus – Richard Dinh, a longtime Ternus deputy, will retain leadership of product design for the iPhone.

Bloomberg explains that product design inside Apple focuses on “translating” concepts created by the industrial design team into real products that can be sold to customers.

New “Ecosystems Platforms and Partnerships” team

Srouji is also establishing a new Ecosystems Platforms and Partnerships team, which will be led by:

  • Matt Costello – Oversees Apple’s home and audio products.
  • Kevin Lynch – Runs a special team inside Apple focused on robotics devices.
