Google’s Universal Cart

Google announced a series of updates to its Shopping platform, the centerpiece being the new Universal Cart. This tool aggregates all of your purchases in one place and lets you shop across multiple Google services—including Search, YouTube, and Gmail. After you add a product, the system’s agentic AI searches for the lowest price, tracks price trends, and notifies you about stock availability.

Key Benefits

  • Compatibility checks – For example, when buying components for a custom PC from various retailers, the Cart can flag incompatibilities before you checkout.
  • Loyalty and savings optimization – If you use Google Wallet, the Cart knows your preferred merchants and loyalty programs, and it will highlight opportunities to maximize points or savings.
  • Seamless checkout – When you’re ready to pay, the interface between Google Shopping and the retailer is streamlined, especially if the retailer accepts Google Wallet (e.g., Nike, Sephora, Target, Fenty, Steve Madden).

Rollout Timeline

  • Summer 2024 – Universal Cart becomes available in Shopping, Search, and Gemini.
  • Later in 2024 – Integration expands to YouTube and Gmail.

Other Announced Features

Google also introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an AI‑driven framework that bridges gaps between online payment platforms and retailers.

  • Geographic rollout – Coming to Canada and Australia in the next few months, with the UK to follow.
  • YouTube integration – UCP will plug into YouTube in the US soon, further turning the platform into a shopping channel.
