Unionization Vote at DeepMind UK

Google’s UK‑based DeepMind workers have voted to unionize. They sent management a letter requesting recognition of the Communication Workers Union and Unite the Union as their representatives, according to The Guardian. The vote took place in April and was driven by reports that Google was close to finalising a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Pentagon AI Deal

The Pentagon announced it had signed deals with several leading AI companies, including Google. Those agreements allow the Defense Department to use the AI technologies for “any lawful use.”

According to a report by The Information, the contracts prohibit the government from employing the technologies for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous‑weapon projects “without appropriate human oversight and control.” However, Google and the other companies have no right to control or veto how the government ultimately uses the AI.

Concerns Over Military Applications

DeepMind workers who spoke to The Guardian expressed worries that the technology they helped develop could be used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Google has reportedly worked with the IDF to expand access to its AI tools and entered a $1.2 billion cloud‑computing contract with the Israeli government in 2021.

Workers’ Demands

The unionizing workers aim to pressure Google to:

• Commit not to develop technology “whose primary purpose is to cause harm or injury to people.”
• Establish an independent ethics oversight body.
• Grant employees the right to refuse participation in specific projects on moral grounds.
