Overview
Google announced a “24/7 personal AI agent” called Gemini Spark at this year’s I/O developer conference. Spark transforms Gemini from a standard AI assistant into an “active partner” that can actually perform tasks for you. It runs on Gemini 3.5 and is deeply integrated with Google Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs, and Slides.
Key Features
- Task automation – Teach Spark to create a list of critical deadlines from your Gmail and send it to you, or summarize updates in long email threads.
- Recurring actions – Set it to spot hidden fees in credit‑card bills every month.
- Workflow orchestration – Ask Spark to review meeting notes in chats and emails, generate polished reports in Google Docs, and draft accompanying emails.
- App integrations – In addition to Workspace, Spark can currently connect to Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart, with more partners arriving soon.
- Safety controls – Spark will ask for confirmation before high‑stakes actions such as spending money or sending emails.
- Future capabilities – Upcoming updates will let Spark send texts and emails, operate your browser, and, via the Gemini desktop app (expected this summer), access files and perform tasks on your computer.
Rollout
- Testing phase – Gemini Spark is rolling out to testers this week.
- Beta availability – It will become available to Google AI Ultra beta users in the US next week.
- Opt‑in model – Activation is completely optional; you decide whether to enable Spark and which apps it can access.
