Expansion of Canvas in AI Mode

Google has expanded access to Canvas in AI Mode to all users in the United States (English) after first launching the feature as part of its Google Labs experiments last year. The rollout makes the tool available through Google’s AI search feature, AI Mode, reaching a much broader audience.

Key Features

  • Project organization & research – Canvas helps users organize and plan projects or conduct deeper research.
  • Document drafting & custom tools – Users can draft documents or create custom tools directly within Google Search, as described in Google’s blog post.
  • Multi‑format output – The feature can turn a research report into a web page, quiz, or audio overview, overlapping with Google’s Notebook LM research tool.
  • Code generation – Users can describe an idea, and Canvas will generate the code needed to transform it into a shareable app or game.
  • Creative writing assistance – Canvas can refine creative writing drafts and provide feedback on projects.
  • Gemini integration – Canvas runs on Gemini, with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers accessing Gemini 3 and a 1 million‑token context window for more complex projects.

How to Use Canvas

  1. Open AI Mode in Google Search.
  2. Click the Canvas option from the tool menu (+).
  3. Describe what you want to create.
  4. A Canvas side panel opens, allowing you to pull information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph.
  5. If building a prototype or app, you can test functionality, toggle to view the underlying code, and refine the app by chatting with Gemini.

Competition

Canvas competes with similar tools from OpenAI and Anthropic. Notably, ChatGPT’s Canvas feature is triggered automatically based on the query, while Google’s Canvas and Anthropic’s Claude require more direct user interaction. All three platforms enable users to get help with writing and turn ideas into functional projects.
